While in the role of Chairman for Ulverston Abbeyfield in the early 90’s and being heavily involved in the extension development which was opened by Princess Diana, Ken realised that the area would greatly benefit from a purpose-built Extra Care Society.
He worked incredibly hard over the years to turn his idea into a reality and it’s because of him and his efforts that Staveley House stands today.
Ken says:
“I have been involved with Abbeyfield for over 50 years and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Charity.”
After years of dedicated service to the Abbeyfield Society in the North of England, his efforts raising money to establish Staveley House and serving as Chairperson on the boards of two care homes, Ken Staveley was awarded an MBE in April 2011.

Jean joined the board of trustees in March 2024 and has become a huge part of the Staveley House family since then. Jean takes her role as Chair of Trustees seriously, making time to come into the home and get to know the residents and staff.
Jean says:
“Working within Staveley House has given me an insight into how a care home is run and maintained. Seeing our residents interact with our staff is so very good. It is a happy house and you get that feeling when you walk in.”
”I spent a few years as a case worker for SSAFA the forces charity. Latterly, I was the the coordinator for Barrow and South Lakeland working for Project Linus, a charity linked to quilt making for children.“
”Now being retired, I needed to occupy myself outside of my own home, which I why I volunteer at Staveley House. I still do some quilt making but most of my family have their heirloom quilts now! Spending time with my husband is important to me as we were apart while he served in the submarine service.”
